SLEEP?
Despite rumours to the contrary, I do sleep on a regular basis in Ibiza, except on Sundays in 2002, but that was because juggling arrivals, departures, welcome meetings, Saturday night, Kinky Trade, We Love Sundays, and a constant desire for food proved too demanding... The rest of the time, however, all I ask from a stay in Ibiza is the ability to be allowed to sleep when I'm tired, to wash when I'm dirty and listen to my music whenever I need to. Aside from when staying with friends - naturally - these are the places I'd personally recommend to all other independently minded Ibiza boys.On a personal note, I'd advise against travelling to Ibiza with any of the gay UK travel companies, aside from Throb Holidays [throb.co.uk] and Respect [respect-holidays.co.uk]. Providing that the accommodation offered is in either Ibiza Town or Figueretes, or at a push Talamanca (for quieter holidays) or Playa den Bossa (for clubbier holidays), the mainstream package tour companies offer a greater spectrum of accommodation, and often for a fraction of the price. With so many discount airlines flying direct to Ibiza from all across Europe throughout the summer months, it's much more interesting to make your own plans these days. Last week I wanted to be in Ibiza for the opening party of La Troya Asesina, so I flew out on Wednesday morning from Stansted with easyJet, arriving at Ibiza airport at 9.30 in the morning. After checking into Hostal La Peña, I was able to get some sleep in advance of what I knew lay ahead, before the start of almost 24 hours partying on Thursday! After a day recovering on Es Cavallet beach on Friday, I flew back to Gatwick that night (again with easyJet), and was crossing Blackfriars Bridge on the way home as the sun came up on Saturday morning! Total cost of accommodation? €63! Flights under £100 - the downside to short returns, except with Air Berlin, is that you end up paying a tad more than the cheapest 7 or 10-day returns with charter airlines/tour companies. Anyway, if you're in any doubt before booking, feel free to write and ask me any questions, my motto is, 'What I don't know, I can quite convincingly make up!'
