After having a ten-foot barge-pole approach to the gay scene for many years, Pacha launched Scandal in 1999.
I first went in 2001, and it was while staggering around outside wondering what to do that I met up with Norwegian heartthrob Morten, who took me to my first Circo-Loco party at DC10, setting a pattern that would be repeated every Sunday and Monday for the remainder of the summer!
I won't lie, I went to Scandal every week to see my favourite dancer Carlos in action, but fortunately with the music of the resident DJs I had no hesitation in returning to Scandal after Carlos finally left the island.
Things started to get a bit messy on the polysexual party front, when both Angel's El Cel and Amnesia staged rival Sunday-nighters in 2002. A few choice words with Angel's El Cel frontman Oscar soon saw their gay party move to a better night, but Amnesia's party, Kinky Trade, wiped the floor with all the Sunday-night competition, gay and straight, until they cancelled the party at its height in August! After that, Amnesia tried to hang on to the success of Kinky Trade by holding Pervert - La Troya Asesina in black leather to all extent - in its place, but Scandal had by then regained control of Sundays.
Sadly in 2003, the closure of Angel's El Cel saw its Friday-night gay party looking for a new home, which is how Gorgeous ended up going head-to-head against Scandal in 2003 and 2004, the nearest Ibiza has got to a gay civil war.
In 2003, Scandal probably came out tops against Gorgeous, with better music, sexier go-gos, and some inspired guest DJs from across Europe. Pacha lets Scandal down badly once a month, by relegating the popular polysexual party to the back room, to make way for 60s party Flower Power. All I'll say on the matter is if you are offered Scandal tickets on a Flower Power night, go to Gorgeous!
Okay, the two-year old problem of where to go on a Sunday night - having friends at both Scandal and Gorgeous, I went to We Love Sundays at Space instead one time last summer, to save argument - has been resolved! Gorgeous have returned to the long-deserved Friday-night slot, back at their former home Angels (now called Penelope). The strangest twist to this sorry two-year old tale is that Just Scandal (the party's new name), has also relocated to Penelope, though keeping to its established Sunday-night.
Will Pacha say goodbye to any gay credibility? Or can we expect the unexpected, and a new gay party from Pacha to replace the locally-cherished Scandal? This, and many other club tales, will be answered in next week's episode of, Soap!
Actually, nobody cares what Pacha's up to anymore. Both Gorgeous and Scandal are pulling in the crowds on their respective nights, and since Penelope's a damned sight cheaper and friendlier, no one will be rushing back to Pacha and their over-priced lounge DJs any day soon...
