SAN ANTONIO Like New York, San Antonio's so good they named it twice! It's other name is Sant Antoni, the Ibicencan name for the town, and the one increasingly used to distance the former fishing village from its loutish Ibiza Uncovered reputation...The very first place I stayed on my very first visit to the island, and like many I couldn't wait to get away from it, and probably wouldn't have returned if it wasn't for the need to visit Café del Mar, in a desperate attempt to justify the amount of money I was spending on Café del Mar compilation CDs! After a break of more than ten years, I finally returned to San An in 2001, to discover that (out-of-season, admittedly) San Antonio is actually a charming little Spanish town, with some good restaurants and a lot of good shops. Café del Mar wasn't open at that time of the year (it was January), but I returned again during the summer, to discover exactly what a magical place the café itself could be. Over the next couple of years, I increasingly looked forward to my trips to the north of the island, being as distant as you could get from the gay scene in Ibiza Town and Figueretes, and often the only way to switch off from the stresses of living on the island. Plus with each trip I'd take a San An virgin to introduce them to the delights of the supposed lager lout capital of the Mediterranean.
San An's a really nice place to visit, and not just for Café del Mar or any of the other sunset cafes, such as Mambo and Savannah. Check it out for yourself.
